The works of Prazeres Côta, like those of her mother Júlia, reflect rural life in the Minho region, its traditional characters, and the influence of religious or mythological beliefs.

This figurine represents the Catholic Saint Anthony (São Antonio). It's the most authentic expression of Prazeres Côta’s personal and creative universe—she shapes clay in a naive and expressive way, depicting what she observes around her.

What I love

  • A figurine that sits somewhere between folk craft and naïve art.
  • A playful and heartfelt portrayal of Saint Anthony.
  • A one-of-a-kind piece, signed by the artist.

The Côta family is the most iconic and representative name in the figurative folk art tradition of Barcelos and the Minho region in northern Portugal.

Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, carries on the tradition begun by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côta da Rocha—the creator of the famous Portuguese Rooster (Galo de Barcelos).

Recognized as “New Talent of the Year” at the 2018 Feira de Barcelos, she was recently featured in the Pottery Museum’s "Geração Côta" exhibition, which includes several of her works from both the museum’s collection and private collectors.
